National Championships
This section attempts to list all national champions for track, road, and crosscountry (for flat distances 3000m and longer). Lists are generally provided only where complete or mostly complete lists are available. Contributions to this section are encouraged. Please submit contributions to the ARRS at kenyoung@wildblue.net .
Note: Championships for countries that no longer exist may be found under a present country that was part of the old country. For example, the marathon champions for Czechoslovakia may be linked thru the marathon champions for Slovakia or the Czech Republic.
Track
Outdoor 10 mile: ENG, RSA, SCO
Note: Standard outdoor track championships are held at 5000m and 10,000m.
In the past, championships were held at a variety of different distances. Outdoor championships held at 3000m,
2 miles, and 3 miles are found under the 5000m championships; championships held at 5 miles and 6 miles are found
under the 10,000m championships. Championships held at 4 miles may be found under either the 5000m or 10,000m championships,
depending on which series they fit into. Indoor championships include all
distances, 3000m and longer.
Road
Marathon: ALB, CUB, ISL, ISR, KOR, MEX
Note: In many cases, road championships are held but the distances may
vary from year to year or there may be a variety of different, sub-marathon road distances held each year. These
are listed under "General Road".
Ultramarathons
Note: These may include road, track,
or cross championships that are at a distance longer than a marathon (42.195
km). The venue may change from year to year with a given series, e.g.,
some 24 hour championships may be road while others are on the track, within the
same series.
Crosscountry
Note: Crosscountry championships
listed here are the traditional crosscountry style races, generally without
significant (more than 500 meters) climb and do not include other off-track or
off-road races such as trail or mountain races.
Trail and Mountain
Note: Trail and mountain races are
generally distinguished from traditional crosscountry races in that there are
usually substantial elevation changes on the order of 100's of meters or more.
It is common that men and women compete in the same race whereas in traditional
crosscountry races, men and women compete separately.
Note: Czechoslovak championships are linked thru CZE and SVK; Soviet
championships are linked thru RUS; Yugoslav and Serbia-Montenegro championships are linked thru SER.
