Notes: The first national marathon championship was held as part of the Indian National Championships in 1938. Starting in 1963, the championships were split into Inter-State, Inter-Zone, and Open Nationals. The Inter-Zone Championships were only held for six years; the other two are still held separately, however the marathon has been held under a separate national road championships since 1985.
