Note: The 1:27:44 reported for Haile Gebreselasie (ETH) and for Samuel Kiplimo Kosgei (KEN) at Berlin GER on 20 Sep 2009 were intermediate road marks enroute to a marathon.  Many fast intermediate times have been reported since then but very few of these have been satisfactorily documented.  Documentation is required at the same level as required for full race marks.  This would include a certification issued for the 30 km distance and documentation that the times were recorded at the certified 30 km mark.  Certification for the full course does not insure that the intermediate marks have been placed with similar accuracy.  It should also be noted that the runner must finish the full distance in order to have intermediate marks accepted as records.
