Notes: This footrace, held in the French medieval town of  Semur-en-Auxois on the Côtes d'Or in the  Bourgogne region, was first held in 1369. It is held during the religious Feast of Pentecost each year. A Royal Ordinance by Charles V  in 1369 condemned games of chance and encouraged sports events instead.  The race is called the “course aux chausses" -   chausses are  socks or hose. Originally this prize was given by the  "meneurs de bœufs", the cattle drovers,  to attract the people to the big cattle market that was held at Semur-en-Auxois during the Pentecost fair.    

Between 1369 and 1566 the race was held but due to wars, plagues, etc it was probably not held every single year.  In 1566 the race became traditional when magistrates of the town allocated prize money (3 livres 13 sols) as a prize. From that date until 1651 the race was held every year. Traditionally the men ran naked which was not unusual in such races at this time.  In 1651, the governor's wife, Marquise d'Origny, was so shocked at this naked footrace that she had the race stopped.

After a break of over three hundred years the race was revived in 1978 and has been held every year since.   The race course is situated in the centre of the medieval city, on the pavement of the streets around the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame, for a distance of 4145 metres. No times are available.
