Note: For 1978 and earlier, these championships were known as the Southern Transvaal Championships.  It is uncertain as to whether the 1939 race is part of this series.  For 1984-1988, these championships were held as part of the Vaal Marathon.

Note: The province of Transvaal, for purposes of athletics, was divided into Southern Transvaal and Northern Transvaal, with the border roughly just north of Johannesburg with Pretoria  in Northern Transvaal. Later.these were divided further, with Western Transvaal, Eastern Transvaaland Far Northern Transvaal coming into being.  In the late seventies, Southern Transvaal became just Transvaal.  After 1994, Transvaal became Central Gauteng, Northern Transvaal  became Gauteng North, Eastern Transvaal became Mpumalanga, Western Transvaal became Central North West, while new athletics regions were formed according to the political provincial division: Limpopo, North West North and Vaal Triangle (all in the “old” Transvaal/Southern Transvaal region). The Vaal Triangle roughly corresponds to the “old” Southern Transvaal.
