Notes: The Powderhall Marathon was inaugurated in 1909 as a feature event at the Powderhall New Year’s Carnival for professionals. The inaugural marathon was run as a road race run from Falkirk to Edinburgh, finishing at Powderhall Stadium. The distance was advertised as 26 miles 385 yards. A recent analysis of the original course by Hugh Farey indicates the distance was 26.22 miles altho another analysis yields 41.7 km. From 1910-42, this race was run on the quarter-mile cinder track at the Powderhall Ground, Edinburgh. The first four runnings were over the full marathon distance. Hans Holmer set an outright world record in 1911. The distance was reduced from the marathon to 15 miles in 1913 and again, in 1919, to 10 miles. From 1919-42 the Powderhall Marathon was run and both a handicap and scratch race. Only the winners of the scratch race are given. The marathon race was dropped in 1943 on account of the war. The 1915 race was run a lap short. George McCrae was the alias of Gavin Sorbie and J Kerr was the alias of John Nicholson.
