Notes: 1942 was the inaugural year. The race distance was 22 miles (35.405 km) except for 1943, 1948, and 1952.
The 1981-1982 distances were slightly longer than 22 miles with the finish in
Caird Park, Dundee.
The inaugural Perth-Dundee race was staged on 22 Sep 1894 by Dundee Hawkhill Harriers. The winner, James M. Galloway
of Dundee Hawkhill Harriers, covered the 21m 1540y distance in 2:28:xx. After Galloway’s inaugural run, a series
of walking matches were held around the turn of the century. A lapse then occurred until 1930-35 when the Dundee
Hawkhill Harriers staged a series of walking matches. The running race was revived by the amalgamed Dundee Harriers
in 1942 and held over a relatively fast 22 mile point-to-point course from South Inch, Perth, via Glencarse, Longforgan,
Invergowrie and Ninewells, finishing on Riverside Drive, Dundee. The 1943 race was extended to the full marathon
distance starting from Muirton Park, Perth, with Tom Richard posting the fastest marathon performance in the UK
during WW II. The 1948 and 1952 races played host to the Scottish Marathon Championship and used a different 26m
385y course from Methven to Dundee. In 1983, the 22 mile, point-to-point
Perth-Dundee course was replaced by a standard marathon and the race was renamed
the City of Dundee People's Health Marathon. The name was shortened to the
City of Dundee Health Marathon for 1988-1991.
