Notes: 1923 is considered the inaugural race of this series. There was an early race held on 01 May 1909 from Sandbach to-Fallowfield and won by James Roberts (ENG) in 2:40:28.8 and a 19 mile race held in 1908 that was won by Frederick Lord in 1:50:23 . The 1923-1928 races were known as the Sporting Chronicle Marathon; the 1931-1936 races were known as the Daily Dispatch Cup Marathon; the 1947 race was known as the Manchester Evening Chronicle Marathon; the 1969-73 events were known as the Maxol Marathon; the 1985 event was known as the Piccadilly Marathon.

The August 1924 race saw the two lead runners inadvertently cut the course. The referee ruled "the placings at the finishing post must stand" and Duncan Wright was awarded the win. Samuel Ferris in 2:47:44 was the first finisher to complete the full course.  On 31 May 1924, the Northern Olympic Trial (Great Northern) Marathon was held, won by Ernest Leatherland (ENG) in 2:48:43.8.

The 2015 course was remeasured as 380m short, due to an error in the calibration course.  The 2013 and 2014 courses were basically the same as the 2015 and are considered to have been a similar amount short.
