Notes: 1953 is considered to be the inaugural year. The first marathon in Hawaii, the AAU Marathon, was held in
1943 on Oahu and was won by Norman K. Tamanaha in 3:03:00. For 1953-1970, the races were held on Oahu and were
named the Hawaiian AAU Marathon. During 1967-70, the races were held over a course quite similar to the present
day Honolulu Marathon. In 1971, the race was moved to Maui and was known as the Hawaiian Marathon and also the
Norman Tamanaha Marathon. In 1977, the name was again changed to the Maui Marathon and the course was certified
for the first time. The race was held at Wailuku for 1971-1984. The 1979 race was on an out/back course; all other
races since 1971 have been held on pt/pt courses. The current course is from Kahului to Kaanapali. The courses
used for the 1971-75 races were approximately one mile (1600 meters) short. The
times for 2015 have been assumed to be net times.
