the IAAF World Cup Marathon. The
1967-1979 and 1996 races were held on the date of the opening of the first Olympic
Games of the modern era in
1896. The April 6th date (Julian) corresponds to March 25th according to
the old calendar. The first Olympic marathon was held on April 10th
(Julian) which was March 29th on the old calendar. The race was known as the Athens International Marathon for
1955-1965 and was held "in memoriam of Spyridon
Louis" in 1986, 1987 and 1989.
